Freshman Admissions Process
To be successful in the admissions process, it is important that you prepare as early as possible for the application process. In fact, the decisions you make as early as your Freshman year of High School can impact your ability to get accepted to Texas A&M. As such, plan ahead and make sure you have done everything you can do to be successful.
Apply as early as possible. The application process begins September 1 of your senior year. To insure all items are received before the deadline, plan on having your application packet to the university by Thanksgiving at the latest.
College Preparatory Coursework
The following list of courses should be taken in High School. We encourage students to take courses beyond this list if your school provides this opportunity.
- 4 years College Preparatory English
- 3.5 years of Mathematics (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and at least half a credit of advanced math)
- 3 years of Science (two must come from Biology I, Chemistry I, Physics I)
- 2 years of the same foreign language
Review Admission Tips
If you are not in the top 10% of your high school class and do not qualify for automatic academic admission, you will need to be admitted through the review admission process. Your application and essay will be critical in this competitive process. It is recommended that you review the following tips and contact an admissions counselor so they can review your application file.
Institutional Exam
Both the SAT I and the ACT are acceptable for the admissions process. Texas A&M will use your best single-date test score. Partial scores from different dates will not be combined. It is recommended that the scores are sent directly from the testing center. The Texas A&M University SAT I Code is 6003 and the ACT code is 4198. The Office of Measurement and Research Services offer an institutional SAT/ACT on the Texas A&M University campus. These scores are reported to the Office of Admissions and Records within two days. For more information about this service, contact MARS at (979) 845-0532.

College Preparation
Keys to successfully preparing for college:
- Apply early.
- Keep records of all activities done in high school. Keep a journal of these experiences. You will find it will come in handy as you complete admissions and scholarship applications.
- Study for the SAT I or ACT. Take these exams in your junior year. This will give you an idea of where you stand and you will be able to study over the summer before your senior year to get your scores up. For SAT I study guides, visit the College Board. This site also includes free practice tests online. Additional online practice tests can be found through Test Preview.
- Complete as much college preparatory course work as possible.
- Visit as many college campuses as you can. Narrow your list down by the fall of your senior year. Choose three campuses to apply to and have plans to fall back on. Even if you were born an Aggie, you should have a plan in case you are not accepted. Remember that if you are interested in the College of Education & Human Development, transfer is always an option.
- Don't get discouraged. Waiting for admissions and financial assistance decisions can be stressful and seem to take forever. Be sure to do everything you can to be successful, and then be patient. Remember, there is always money for college and there will always be more than one way to become an Aggie.
- In your essay, mention all contact you have had with Texas A&M officials/recruiters. Also, mention any academic visits to the Texas A&M campus you have taken.
- Keep copies of everything you submit to the universities you apply to. Be sure to document when items were sent and stay in touch with the university to make sure your application file is received.
- Stay in touch with the CEHD recruitment office. We can provide options for you.
